The Borborema Strike-Slip Shear Zone System (NE Brazil): Large-Scale Intracontinental Strain Localization in a Heterogeneous Plate

چکیده

Abstract Large-scale strike-slip faults are fundamental tectonic elements of the continental lithosphere. They constitute plate boundaries (continental transforms), separate terranes with contrasting geological histories within accretionary orogens, or accommodate heterogeneous deformation in intracontinental settings. In ancient where deeper levels crust exposed, these expressed as shear zones materialized by up to tens km-wide mylonitic belts. The Borborema zone system northeastern Brazil is one largest and best-exposed systems world, cropping out over 250,000 km2. Here, we review its main geophysical, structural, petrologic, geochronologic characteristics discuss factors controlling development. This complex scale composed a set NE- NNE-trending dextral from which there two major E-trending horse-tail terminations into transpressional belt branch, well several smaller NE-trending sinistral zones. marked extensive linear curvilinear magnetic gradients, implying their continuation at depth. migmatite amphibolite-facies mylonites, but entire shows evidence late lower temperatures. developed during stages Neoproterozoic Brasiliano (Pan-African) orogeny (mainly 590 560 Ma), postdating more than 20 Ma stage contractional deformation. Localization shearing this intraplate setting was controlled rheological contrasts between blocks distinct Paleoproterozoic histories, presence preorogenic rifts, craton geometry, enhanced magmatic activity, highlighting importance heterogeneity nucleation evolution.

The distributions of slip rate and ductile deformation in a strike- slip shear zone

A simple mechanical model and dimensional analysis are used to derive a scaling law for the partitioning between slip rate on a strike-slip fault and distributed deformation in the far-field. The depth of the fault, the distributions of stress, strain rate and slip rate are solved for a given far-field force or displacement in a 2-D medium with a linear temperature-dependent viscous rheology. A...

Major intracontinental strike-slip faults and contrasts in lithospheric strength

A large fraction of major intracontinental strike-slip faults, defi ned here as those slipping at rates of ~10 mm/yr or more, lie adjacent to relatively strong regions, such as oceanic lithosphere or Precambrian shields. We suggest that such faults form adjacent to discontinuities in strength, because strain in a continuous medium must concentrate near such strong objects. Concentration in stra...

Stick-slip instabilities and shear strain localization in amorphous materials.

We study the impact of strain localization on the stability of frictional slipping in dense amorphous materials. We model the material using shear transformation zone (STZ) theory, a continuum approximation for plastic deformation in amorphous solids. In the STZ model, the internal state is quantified by an effective disorder temperature, and the effective temperature dynamics capture the spont...

Strike-slip motion of a mega-splay fault system in the Nankai oblique subduction zone

We evaluated the influence of the trench-parallel component of plate motion on the active fault system within the Nankai accretionary wedge from reflection seismic profiles, high-resolution seafloor bathymetry, and deep-towed sub-bottom profiles. Our study demonstrated that a large portion of the trench-parallel component of oblique plate subduction is released by strike-slip motion along a fau...

Shear Localization due to Strain Softening in Side Pressed Cylinders

In this paper, shear localization due to strain softening in sidepressed cylinders, is inverstigated. Shear localization causes formation of macroscopic shear bands which can be obsserved in the metallographic cross-section. In this paper, for the first time a method is presented in which a simple two-slice model is used to study the formation of shear bands. The results obtained form this mode...
